You can’t go straight from the out-house to the pent-house.
The crew of Perfect 10 finished 5th out of the 24 X-35 OD fleet, who participated in the ABN AMRO North Sea Regatta in Holland. Although a top 5 finish was the team goal, the crew came away a little disappointed, but fully motivated to take a lot of positives into the World Championships (Kiel, Germany) in a few weeks time.
‘Perfect 10’ sailed with two different crew members for this event (because the core team tactician and crew boss had to make the frustrating decision of trading racing with exam preparation). Armed with an Aussie at the back and the highly experienced Nicky McGregor in the middle of the boat, the team sailed a cracking event, battling consistently in the top 5. Unfortunately, it was only owing to a dubious protest which uprooted the team from their deserved 2nd place. The team will certainly take something key away from this event – always check the protest board, even after a clean days racing! (Had Saltonstall been there we would still be doing press ups).
The team now have a two week break from the X-35 fleet as the boat is delivered to Germany. Preparation for the worlds will take the form of an Italian Match Race event for four of the crew and then a couple of days out in Kiel before kick off on the 20th June. The team will be back to a full crew complement and raring to go.
The North Sea Regatta provided another exciting close racing event where the teams pace could be really tested. Confidence is running high. Now it is just a question of analysing the weaknesses that have been highlighted so far and prepare diligently for ‘the big one’ in a few weeks time.
